So much more than a “Dance Class”

The Greater Boston Social Dance Program offers a series of social dance classes designed to help children develop essential social skills in both formal and informal settings. Through learning—and, more importantly, practicing—proper social etiquette, students gain confidence by knowing how to carry themselves not only in the ballroom, but in everyday life. Participants learn the value of a firm handshake, eye contact, good posture, and making a strong first impression. Instruction also includes standing as a sign of respect, everyday etiquette tips, escorting and seating partners, and the importance of engaging, respectful conversation.

The Greater Boston Social Dance Program offers classes in Wellesley, Weston, Wayland, Hingham, Dover, and Sherborn. In many of these communities, the program has been a longstanding tradition, providing essential life skills to generations of children. The Wellesley program, in particular, began in 1929 under the direction of Juliet Ferguson and was known as the Juliet Ferguson School of Dance. In 1957, Mrs. Ferguson hired Don Mason, an instructor from the Arthur Murray School of Dance. Upon her retirement in 1975, Mr. Mason assumed leadership of the program and continued teaching until his passing in December 2016. Today, the program is led by Douglas Trudeau, Mr. Mason’s nephew, who proudly carries on the tradition established by his uncle and Mrs. Ferguson. In 2029, the Greater Boston Social Dance Program will celebrate its centennial—100 years of providing this essential training to young people.

Over the past nine decades, tens of thousands of students have participated in the program. The social values taught and the lifelong benefits these classes provide are truly unparalleled. Each class is designed to be both uplifting and fun, while emphasizing courtesy, kindness, and respect. Through the social setting of dance, students naturally learn good manners, cooperation, and consideration for others—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

See what parents say about the program:

“My daughter took part in social dance two years ago and she found so much of your program helpful in her school interview process at Newton Country Day School.”

“I wanted to thank you both for providing such a wonderful and valuable experience for these kiddos!! I truly wish it continued for next year. My daughter was literally terrified and wouldn’t get out of the car at the first class, but you cultivated a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere that drew all of the kids in. My daughter quickly came to look forward to Monday nights and what I witnessed when I chaperoned was such great, clean fun, it was wonderful to see!! The confidence you instilled in teaching them how to introduce themselves and make a lasting (and positive) first impression will serve them for the rest of their lives.” Thank you for all you do!! I can’t wait to send my next daughter (and chaperone) in 2 years!! You are such a positive force in our community and we are grateful for it!!”

“Thank you for all of your efforts- this was a great experience for our son and I enjoyed chaperoning as well.  Thank you for offering this in our community!”

“Just a quick note of gratitude to you and Kim for offering this wonderful program! My two older sons have completed Social Dance, and our youngest will do so in a few years. My husband and I firmly believe that the skills they learn are invaluable, and we’re grateful that this is available here in Hingham.”

“A quick thank you for such a wonderful social dance session- my son had a great experience in class this year. My husband chaperoned last week and was very impressed with the program. It is always great to push these kids a bit outside their comfort zones and teach them new skills to carry them through life. We had a big celebratory dinner after class last night and got to see some of the new moves they learned!”

“Thanks so much for the great season of dance!  My son was reluctant to join the first social dance, but he quickly realized he liked it and was sad he had to miss the last session.”

“Thank you so much for a wonderful program! My son grumbled about going but always had fun and I loved the skills he picked up and how you connected them to future success (such as interviewing for jobs). It’s a great learning experience and I look forward to sending his two younger brothers in future years! “
