So much more than a “Dance Class”

The Greater Boston Social Dance Program provides a series of social dance classes that helps children develop social skills in both formal and informal settings.  By learning and more importantly, practicing their social etiquette, our students walk away with great confidence by knowing what to do, not only in the ballroom, but in all situations in life.  Students will learn the importance of a firm handshake, eye contact, posture, confidence, making a good first impression, standing as a sign of respect, everyday etiquette tips, escorting and seating partners and the importance of conversation.

The Greater Boston Social Dance Program runs classes in Wellesley, Weston, Wayland, Hingham, Duxbury, Dover and Sherborn.  For many of these communities, this program has been a long standing tradition and has provided these life skills to numerous generations of children.  In fact, the Wellesley program began in 1929 and was run by Juliet Ferguson.  The classes were conducted under the name Juliet Ferguson School of Dance.  In 1957 she hired Don Mason, as an instructor from Arthur Murray School of Dance.  When she retired in 1975, Mr. Mason took over her classes and taught them until he passed away in December 2016.   Douglas Trudeau, who is Mr. Mason’s nephew, took over the program and now proudly continues the tradition set forth by his uncle and Mrs. Ferguson. In 2029, we will be celebrating our centennial, 100 years of providing this essential training for our youth.

During the program’s nine decade history, tens of  thousands of students have participated. The social values learned and the benefits this program will bring to your child are unprecedented.  The class is designed to be uplifting and fun.  During each class students learning the importance of being courteous, kind and polite to each other.  We use the social setting of dancing as a means of instilling these good manners in the child.

See what parents say about the program:

“My daughter took part in social dance two years ago and she found so much of your program helpful in her school interview process at Newton Country Day School.”

“I wanted to thank you both for providing such a wonderful and valuable experience for these kiddos!! I truly wish it continued for next year. My daughter was literally terrified and wouldn’t get out of the car at the first class, but you cultivated a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere that drew all of the kids in. My daughter quickly came to look forward to Monday nights and what I witnessed when I chaperoned was such great, clean fun, it was wonderful to see!! The confidence you instilled in teaching them how to introduce themselves and make a lasting (and positive) first impression will serve them for the rest of their lives.” Thank you for all you do!! I can’t wait to send my next daughter (and chaperone) in 2 years!! You are such a positive force in our community and we are grateful for it!!”

“Thank you for all of your efforts- this was a great experience for our son and I enjoyed chaperoning as well.  Thank you for offering this in our community!”

“Just a quick note of gratitude to you and Kim for offering this wonderful program! My two older sons have completed Social Dance, and our youngest will do so in a few years. My husband and I firmly believe that the skills they learn are invaluable, and we’re grateful that this is available here in Hingham.”

“A quick thank you for such a wonderful social dance session- my son had a great experience in class this year. My husband chaperoned last week and was very impressed with the program. It is always great to push these kids a bit outside their comfort zones and teach them new skills to carry them through life. We had a big celebratory dinner after class last night and got to see some of the new moves they learned!”

“Thanks so much for the great season of dance!  My son was reluctant to join the first social dance, but he quickly realized he liked it and was sad he had to miss the last session.”

“Thank you so much for a wonderful program! My son grumbled about going but always had fun and I loved the skills he picked up and how you connected them to future success (such as interviewing for jobs). It’s a great learning experience and I look forward to sending his two younger brothers in future years! “
